Essential roadworks - A5094 Inkerman Terrace, Whitehaven lasting up to 5 weeks

Road works sign

Cumbria County Council will be carrying out essential footway reconstruction work on the A5094 Inkerman Terrace, Whitehaven, starting on Monday 1st August. The works are scheduled to last 5 weeks, weather permitting, and have been scheduled to take place during the school summer holidays to minimise disruption as much as possible.

The work is being carried out to replace damaged sections of kerbs and renew the worn footway surface on this busy pedestrian route into the town.

.

In order to accommodate plant and machinery, and ensure the works can be safely carried out, it will be necessary to invoke a temporary one-way system on Inkerman Terrace for the duration of the works, and the suspension of the permit / disc parking provision. During this time there will be no access to Inkerman Terrace from the A595, but traffic leaving town will be able to exit via Inkerman Terrace onto the A595.

Diversions taking traffic back into Whitehaven via the A5094 New Road will be clearly signed and maintained throughout the works, and there will be restrictions imposed on minor local roads to prevent ‘rat running’.

Following the footway improvement works, carriageway resurfacing works will take place on Inkerman Terrace to renew the deteriorating carriageway surface. This work is scheduled for Monday 12th September, with an expected duration of 1 week. This work will have to be carried out under an official road closure for the duration and residents and businesses will be kept fully informed.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways, said: “The council is investing £220,000 in this essential maintenance work on a key arterial route into the town. For the footway works, we are implementing the temporary one way system to keep traffic flowing through the town, but unfortunately we have no other option but to close the road to carry out the necessary carriageway resurfacing work in September. We will be working hard with our contractor to get the job done as soon as possible but there will inevitably be some disruption and we would advise drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.”
