Go green with your waste this Compost Awareness Week

Food Waste

The council has teamed up with getcomposting.com to offer home compost bins at a fraction of their recommended retail price, with a new reduced price for 2016. Residents across Cumbria can purchase compost bins from as little as £7, with a great ‘buy one get one half price’ offer also available.

Home composting is a great way to reduce the amount of kitchen waste that goes into household bins, so composting at home significantly reduces the amount of waste that needs to be treated. More than 30% of the average household waste can be composted and it also produces a free supply of top quality compost for gardeners.

During International Compost Awareness Week, waste prevention officers from Cumbria County Council will be visiting Arnside CE Primary School and Thursby Primary School to talk about the benefits of composting. Pupils will be able to take part in activities including a ‘Bug ID’ to see what bugs live in a compost bin, make their own compost in a bottle and plant their own seeds in compost.

The county council is also taking part in a Compost Roadshow at the Farmers Market in Carlisle on Friday 6 May, 9am-3pm, when people will be able to find out more information about the range of home composters available.

Councillor Janet Willis, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member responsible for Environment, said: “We know many households already compost at home but we want even more to get involved. The new compost bin offers are a great incentive to encourage more residents to get composting. Home composting organic waste not only helps reduce carbon emissions but is a good way to reduce the amount of waste sent for treatment.”
