Currock - Denton Holme bridge successfully installed

Currock Denton Holme Bridge

The new bridge connects Currock and Denton Holme across the Cumbrian Coast Line between Lund Crescent and Bousteads Grassing. The new bridge is located just south of the existing structure which is scheduled for demolition once the new bridge has been opened. It will connect the existing footpath on the Denton Holme side via a ramped walkway, offering full access to pedestrians on foot, cyclists and disabled wheelchair users. The new bridge also provides a continuous cycle link from Currock along the River Caldew north to Carlisle City Centre and south to Dalston.

Councillor Stewart Young, leader of Cumbria County Council said:

“This project forms part of a £7.8 million programme of investment in transport and infrastructure in Cumbria, secured by the LEP and Cumbria County Council. It follows years of campaigning by local residents and Councillors for this much needed improvement. I am particularly pleased that the main contractor, Story Construction, have been able to use so many of our excellent local businesses who have all contributed to this exciting scheme.  The new bridge will be a testimony to their skill and dedication for many years to come.”

Further groundworks will be required on site following the installation of the new bridge before opening to the public, which is scheduled for early September.    The existing bridge remains open during this time for people to use, with a temporary pedestrian diversion in place to the footpath.

The Currock Bridge project has been achieved by utilising the expertise of several local organisations - the bridge was fabricated at M&S Engineering in Eastriggs, painted at J.E Foster & Son at Longtown, transported to site by Lawsons of Cockermouth, and engineered and installed by Story Contracting of Carlisle.

The project is one of three transport schemes funded from an allocation of £7.8 million from Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership’s (LEP) Local Growth Fund. The project is managed by Cumbria County Council on behalf of Cumbria LEP.
