Council teams up with charity for free giveaway event!

Op Shop

The giveaway day will take place at the Op Shop Warehouse on Caldewgate in Carlisle, from 10:30am - 3pm on Saturday 6 August, and everyone is welcome to attend!

The giveaway day has been devised due to the Op Shop moving to new premises and they simply do not have enough space to take everything with them.  Rather than throwing these items away they have teamed up with the council in a bid to reduce waste and extend the life of the items.

There are no terms or restrictions for people grabbing themselves a freebie, which will range from crockery and cutlery to lamps, bedding, linen, ornaments, pictures, toys, games, push chairs and some pieces of furniture all completely free to a good home. The event is not open to traders with vans.

All electrical items will have been PAT tested & certified safe.

As well as grabbing a freebie, there will also be information available about the work of the Op Shop and advice on how to get involved or volunteer.

Up-cycling old or unwanted goods is a great way to make your money go further. Staff from Cumbria County Council’s waste management and local welfare assistance teams will be on hand offering advice on other ways of making your money go further by wasting less, and information on which organisations can help.

Jon Greenwood, Business Development Manager for Op Shops said:

“We have some great items which have plenty of life left in them, we would rather give them away than just send them to the tip. Some of the pieces would be great for art or up-cycling projects, let's hope someone can make use of them, our need is always there but it's nice to be able to give away some of the unsold items.”

Janet Willis, council portfolio holder for Environment said:

“This is a great opportunity for the local community to up-cycle a variety of goods which have plenty of use left in them. Cumbria County Council is delighted to be working alongside the Op Shop to develop this event, which we hope will be even more popular than last year.  Make sure you’re there early to beat the queues!”

The Op Shop warehouse is situated in the yard behind KC Superbikes at Caldewgate. The entrance is immediately after joining Church street from John Street. Advisory signs will be in place along the main road.
