CEO of National Libraries Taskforce visits award winning Barrow Library

Library books

Kathy Settle, Chief Executive of the National Libraries Taskforce was in Cumbria on Thursday 11 August to visit the award-winning libraries in Barrow and Dalton. Kathy met with members of the team and learned about the valuable role our libraries play in their local communities.

The National Libraries Taskforce was set up to enable libraries in England to exploit their potential and be recognised as a vital resource for all to help shape the public library of the 21st century.

Kathy visited Dalton Library and Dalton Community Centre to see how the re-location will work and was impressed by the approach to new opening hours and the free Wi-Fi provision.  Kathy then attended Barrow Library and was met by the sight of a Giant Peach outside on the lawn - the library is taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge and the Roald Dahl-themed ‘Big Friendly Read’ with drama workshops, short stories, fancy dress and all sorts of whacky whiz-popping fun.

The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. You can sign up at your local library, and read six library books of your choice to complete the Challenge.

During Kathy’s visit she was able to chat with library managers from Cumbria Libraries about her role as CEO of the National Libraries Taskforce and the ‘Libraries Deliver: Ambition for Public Libraries in England 2016-2021’ document, due to be published soon. Library managers were also able to talk to Kathy about the fantastic work that goes on in our libraries, in particular how our digital and health offers benefit the local community in addition to the traditional library services available.

Ruth Prosser, Community Services Manager for Barrow Library said:

“We are honoured to have Kathy visit us in Barrow and we learnt a lot from the national perspective.  Kathy was really impressed with Barrow Library and I think she learnt a lot too - especially what a fabulous team we have here in Barrow and Dalton.”

The Summer Reading Challenge continues until the end of the summer holidays. For more information visit www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk
