Major resurfacing works on Kendal Bypass

Road works sign

Cumbria County Council is investing £400,000 in this essential maintenance work which will involve reconstruction of the northbound exit and southbound entry slip roads.

The work will take place throughout the day and night, in order to minimise disruption to road users, and will replace worn-out sections of road with a brand new surface.

Resurfacing of the northbound exit slip road which leads onto the A6 into Kendal is scheduled to start in the evening on Friday 6 May and, weather permitting, should be completed in time for the morning rush hour of Monday 9 May.

The southbound entry slip road, which leads from the A6 out of Kendal, will be resurfaced the following weekend, from the evening on Friday 13 May to early morning on Monday 16 May.

To allow resurfacing to be safely carried out, slip roads will be temporarily closed while work takes place - see below for full details of closures.

Drivers wanting to use the A6 Shenstone Interchange are advised to use the A5284 Windermere Road (Kendal North) or the A65 over both weekends.

Advance warning signs will be positioned around Kendal ahead of the works. Residents and businesses are asked to plan their journeys and deliveries in light of the planned works.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for highways, said: “We are investing around £400,000 in this essential maintenance work which will provide a much improved road surface. Shenstone is one of the key routes into Kendal, so our contractor will be working around the clock to get the job done as quickly as possible. We’ve timed this work to take place over two weekends in order to minimise disruption and we would ask drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys during this period.”

Note:

To allow resurfacing work to be safely carried out, the following slip roads from the Kendal Bypass will be closed:

  • Northbound exit slip road leading onto the A6 into Kendal will be closed from 7.30pm on Friday 6 May to 6am on Monday 9 May. Also, the A591 southbound exit slip road to the A6 Kendal South will be closed from 1am on Saturday 7 May until 6am on Monday 9 May.

  • The southbound entry slip road, which leads from the A6 out of Kendal, will be closed from 7.30pm on Friday 13 May to 6am on Monday 16 May. Please note that there will be no exit from Kendal A6 Milnthorpe Road onto Kendal Bypass during this weekend, beyond the Hadwins Approved Garage.
