Public urged to stay away from closed roads and bridges

Bridge closed yellow sign

The public is being urged to stay away from closed roads and bridges and avoid putting themselves at risk on unsafe structures.

In particular increasing numbers of people are ‘sight-seeing’ at the southern end of the A591, and even removing barriers to get a better look. This is dangerous and foolhardy, puts people at risk and wastes council staff time.

At the A591 the council is now installing security fencing around the entire length of damaged road to prevent access. This extreme and expensive measure would not be necessary if people respected the closure notices.

A spokesperson for Cumbria County Council said:

“We understand the damage is dramatic, but people need to stay away. It’s dangerous and it is costing the council time and money we shouldn’t be spending when we have so much else to be dealing with. Please respect the signs. They are there for a reason
