Victoria Bridge, Kendal - full closure to all traffic

Victoria Bridge 1

Cumbria County Council is today closing Victoria Bridge in Kendal to all traffic, including cyclists and pedestrians, following further damage caused by continuous fast flowing water.

A further inspection by a specialist diving team has revealed that the river bed has now been eroded underneath a second bridge pillar. As a result, the county council has now introduced a full closure of the bridge as a safety precaution.

This damage has occurred since the bridge was closed to west-bound traffic on 6 January 2016 after erosion was found under the bridge pillar on the upstream side of the bridge.

The county council recognises the importance of the bridge in Kendal and reopening of the bridge is a priority project for the council.

The council’s design team is creating repair plans now and work is expected to start on the bridge in around two weeks, by which time the necessary equipment will be on site. That work will take around a week, with a further week needed for the repair to ‘cure’ before it can be fully reopened to traffic - around four weeks in total.

The council is also reviewing all scheduled roadworks in Kendal, including possible temporary suspension of improvement works at the Milnthorpe Road/Romney Road junction, to ease the pressure on the road network.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Closing Victoria Bridge is a big blow for Kendal. We had hoped to keep it open for east-bound traffic and pedestrians but the extent of the damage following the floods means it’s no longer safe to keep it open. We fully understand the impact this will have on Kendal and we’re working hard to get repairs done so we can reopen the bridge as soon as possible.”

A signed diversion via Parkside Road, Sedbergh Road and Sandylands Road will be in place during the bridge closure. This route is suitable for all traffic except HGVs because of a 13 feet 3 inch height restriction.
