Victoria Bridge repairs get underway following flood damage

Victoria Bridge Kendal

Work has today started on the repair of Victoria Bridge in Kendal, and it is anticipated that it will reopen to traffic next week.Divers have been in the river installing ‘props’ under the damaged bridge foundation this afternoon. These provide a vital initial safety measure to stabilise where the river has scoured away the original bridge pier.

From tomorrow a crane will be on site to allow the next stage of work to begin. This will involve inserting ‘grout bags’ under to back fill the void created by the river.

These provide the formwork required to cast concrete elements with the mass and stability to withstand rapidly flowing water. These grout bags can be positioned and filled with concrete from the surface in shallow water or by divers in deeper water. Since they are cast-in-place, they fit perfectly into the required space. The great advantage is that these do not require coffer dams to be created which would allow the damage area to be drained of water, this is an important advantage in situations like this where rapid repair is a priority.

Once the grout bags are in place they will require some time to harden sufficiently to carry heavy goods vehicles and so the bridge may still be closed for some days after the emergency work has been completed.

It is currently anticipated that the bridge will reopen to traffic by the middle of next week.

Further work will be required in the summer when water levels allow damming of part of the river in order construct aprons and anti-scour nets to protect the new foundation against future flood events.

Nick Raymond, Senior Manager - Network Management, said:

“The closure of Victoria Bridge was absolutely necessary but it has caused significant problems for drivers in the Kendal area, so I’m delighted river conditions have allowed us to get underway with the repair work. This will be a temporary repair but it will allow us to reopen the bridge and then plan the full repair. If all goes to plan we hope to reopen next week."
