Cumbria County Council Christmas and New Year opening hours

Cumbria County Council will continue to provide key services over the Christmas and New Year period.

Most council offices across the county will be open from 9am-5pm on Tuesday 29 December and Wednesday 30 December, and will also be open from 9am-3pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Offices will be closed on bank holidays - Christmas Day, Monday 28 December and Friday 1 January, and will reopen on Monday, 4 January 2016.

Here are more details of opening times, out-of-hours contacts, holiday cover arrangements and other relevant information.

Adult Social Care:

Residential and home care services operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Adult Social Care offices opening hours are as follows:

� Christmas Eve 24 December - opening 9am to 5pm
� Christmas Day - Closed
� Boxing Day - Closed
� Open on Tuesday 29 December 9am to 5pm, Wednesday 30 December 9am to 5pm and Thursday 31 December from 9am to 5pm
� New Year’s Day (Friday 1 January) - Closed
� Open usual hours from Monday 4 January.

Children's Services (for children's social care):

Children's social care offices: The Courts, English Street, and Morton Family Centre, Carlisle; Eden Family Centre and Skirsgill, Penrith; New Oxford Street, Workington; Market Street, Barrow; and Blencathra House, Whitehaven, will all be closed on bank holidays but open 9am - 5pm on 29, 30 and 31 December. SLDC, Kendal, will all be closed on bank holidays but open 9am - 5pm on 29 and 30 December and 9am-4 pm on 24 and 31 December.

During closure periods, the out-of-hours number is - 0333 240 1727 - which can be used 24-hours a day for children's social care emergencies.

Recycling:

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) will all be open as usual throughout the festive season with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, when they will all be closed.

They will all be closing at the slightly earlier time of 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Otherwise they will be open at the usual opening hours shown below:

� Ambleside, Rothay Holme - 8am - 6pm, seven days a week.
� Kendal, Canal Head 8am - 4pm, seven days a week.
� Ulverston, Morecambe Road - 8am - 6pm, seven days a week.
� Grange-over-Sands, Guides Lot - 8am - 4pm, Thursday - Saturday (note: may open later or close early during winter for health and safety reasons)
� Frizington, Yeathouse Quarry - 8am - 4pm, seven days a week. (note: may open later or close early during winter for health and safety reasons)
� Millom, Redhills - 8am - 4pm for recycling materials, 8am - 2pm for residual household waste, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
� Penrith, Flusco - 8am - 6pm, seven days a week.
� Kirkby Stephen, Hobsons Lane - 8am - 6pm, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
� Maryport, Glasson Industrial Estate - 8am - 6pm, seven days a week.
� Workington, Clay Flatts - 8am - 6pm, seven days a week.
� Wigton, Syke Park 8am - 6pm, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday.
� Barrow, Walney Road - 8am - 6pm, seven days a week.
� Carlisle, Bousteads Grassing - 8am - 6pm, seven days a week.
� Brampton, Townfoot Industrial Estate - 10am - 6pm every day except Tuesday

Note:
For householders
The Household Waste Recycling Centre ‘Permit Scheme’ will remain temporarily suspended over the Christmas and New Year period across the county’s HWRC network to allow for ease of disposal of flood damaged waste for householders at this time. This will be reviewed early in the New Year.

For businesses
Businesses that need to dispose of flood damaged waste should contact their insurer or usual commercial waste collectors in the first instance. For small businesses that are unable to access such collections, the county council is able to provide support with waste collections; please contact the Waste Helpline for further information 0845 055 1118.

Cumbria Highways:

The Highways Hotline will be available throughout Christmas and New Year on 0845 609 6609 for reporting highways problems or via the email highways@cumbria.gov.uk. Any emergencies during out of hours (17:00 hours - 08:30 hours on weekdays and all times on weekends and bank holidays) should be reported to the police.

� During public holidays over the Christmas period, calls should be limited to serious highways problems such as flooding, landslips and severe weather.
� Staff will be on-call throughout the holiday period to deal with highways issues such as severe weather problems.

Windermere Ferry
The ferry will be closed on Christmas Day and 26th December. It will run on New Year's Day between 10.10am and 5.30pm (times from Ferry Nab). Otherwise, the ferry will operate its usual service, crossing between Ferry Nab at Bowness and Ferry House at Far Sawrey between 6.50am and 8.50pm Monday to Saturday and between 9.50am and 8.50pm on Sunday.

Libraries:

All libraries will close at 1pm on Christmas Eve. The six Group libraries (Carlisle, Penrith, Barrow, Whitehaven, Workington and Kendal) will be closed on Christmas Day, Saturday 26 December and Monday 28 December. They will be open until 5pm on 29 and 30 December, and will close at 1pm on New Year’s Eve. Branch libraries will close at 1pm on Christmas Eve and reopen on Saturday 2 January 2016 when normal opening days and hours apply.
