County council responds to Whitehaven Academy announcement

Following the announcement this afternoon that there is to be a change of sponsor at Whitehaven Academy, Councillor Sue Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Learning and Inclusion said:

“We are delighted by this announcement. The county council has been working hard behind the scenes for over a year to make the case for a change of sponsor. It’s very positive to see a result from that effort   There is now an opportunity to take stock and make sure the right sponsor is found so the school can move forward positively and pupils can get the education they deserve. The school is in desperate need of repair and it will be critical that any incoming sponsor can address the problems with the fabric of the building, this must mean serious financial support from Government. The county council is ready to support the process to identify a new sponsor and would hope to work with them, through the established CASL arrangement, to help them hit the ground running and make a difference for pupils.”
