Council welcomes opening of new Extra Care Housing scheme

The opening of the new Bramble Court Extra Care Housing development in Brampton has been welcomed by the county council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Care, Cllr Beth Furneaux.

Bramble Court is the product of collaborative work over a number of years by Cumbria County Council, Impact Housing Association, Brampton and Beyond Community Trust, the Homes and Communities Agency and Carlisle City Council.

Speaking in advance of the official opening on 16 December, Cllr Furneaux said:

“This opening marks the culmination of several years’ hard work by a number of organisations and individuals and should rightly be celebrated. Supporting older, disabled and vulnerable people to live independent and healthy lives is a key priority for the council and developing extra care housing is one of the ways we will achieve this. In Brampton the county council committed £800,000 to the £5.2m development costs of the scheme as well as providing the land via a Community Asset Transfer to the Brampton and Beyond Community Trust.”

The council’s commitment to Extra Care Housing is outlined in the Commissioning Strategy for Care and Support delivered by Adult Social Care (2016-20) and the Extra Care Housing and Supported Living Strategy 2016-25.  Cumbria currently has approximately 700 extra care housing units. The council projects that there will be a demand for approximately 2800 extra care housing units across the six districts by 2025.

Cllr Furneaux continued:

“Looking to the future we have a clear plan in place to ensure that the county can meet the future demand for Extra Care Housing. The council has set aside capital funding to support a programme of new developments and is currently undertaking a procurement process to establish a framework of development partners who will build and manage new schemes across Cumbria. As Brampton shows, these types of project take time to develop, but with the work now underway I am confident that many more people will have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of Extra Care Housing in the future.”
