Highways improvement works for two schools in Allerdale

Cumbria County Council is pleased to announce two programmes of highways improvement works close to two schools in Allerdale – Seaton Academy, and Ashfield Infants and Junior Schools in Workington.  The works are designed to enhance road safety, particularly for children and parents walking to each school site.

Seaton Academy

The council plans to undertake highway improvements outside Seaton Academy at Main Road, Seaton.  These works include the installation of a zebra crossing, widening of the pavement at strategic points and improvements to street lighting, designed to facilitate safer crossing of the carriageway.  Works will begin on Monday 24 July, expected to last approximately 3 weeks and will be carried out under temporary traffic signals.

Newlands Lane

The council plans to undertake highway improvements outside Ashfield Infants School at Newlands Lane, Workington.  These include the installation of a signalised pedestrian crossing, widening of the pavement, improvements to street lighting and carriageway resurfacing works.  The purpose of the scheme is to provide a safer means of crossing the carriageway, particularly for pedestrians accessing Ashfield Infants School, the nearby Ashfield Junior School and Workington Academy.  The new traffic signals will be linked with the existing signals on the A596 High Street to ensure the most efficient management of traffic.  Preliminary works on the footway of the A596 will begin on Sunday 23 July.  The works on Newlands Lane are scheduled to begin on Monday 24 July, with an expected duration of approximately 5 weeks and will be carried out under a temporary road closure.

Councillor Keith Little, Cabinet Member for Highways & Transport, said:

“I’m very pleased these works to improve the safety of school children and their parents is going ahead during the summer holidays.  This is part of a huge programme of highways improvement works across the county which I’m delighted to see is now underway. The outcome of these works will be better and safer roads for everyone.”
