Hunter Davies set to open new room at Carlisle Library

Renowned author and broadcaster Hunter Davies will officially open Carlisle Library’s new public meeting room, which is being named in memory of his late wife and local author Margaret Forster, on Wednesday 12 July.

The new facility was built as part of a project to install new toilets outside Carlisle Library and is available for hire by the public during library opening hours.

Carlisle-born Margaret was a member of Carlisle Public Library - then in Tullie House - from an early age, taking out six books a week regularly. She was a prolific author of more than 40 books. Her second novel 'Georgy Girl' was made popular with a memorable film starring Lynn Redgrave and Charlotte Rampling.

The Margaret Forster Room is decorated with framed book covers, photographs and some of Margaret’s writings, including an early article she wrote in 1956 for the then Carlisle and County High School for Girls’ magazine entitled ‘Climbing in Winter’.

Hunter Davies and his late wife opened the current Carlisle Library in The Lanes in May 1986 and Hunter Davies also officially opened the library’s self-service facility in 2011

Mari Pearce, Cumbria County Council’s Community Services Manager (Carlisle), said: “Margaret was a keen supporter of libraries and researched her books ‘Hidden Lives’ and ‘Rich Desserts and Captains Thin’ (Story of Carrs) in Carlisle Library, so we thought it was very apt to name our new public meeting room in her honour. We’re thrilled that Hunter Davies will be carrying out the official opening and we hope the new room will be very popular.”

The Margaret Forster Room is situated on Level 2 of Carlisle Library, accessible via stairs and lift. The room can comfortably seat 16 people in a boardroom formation. More may be seated in a theatre/lecture style set up. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided. The room is available for hire during library opening hours.

Carlisle Library opening times:

Monday - 9am-5.30pm

Tuesday - 10am-7pm

Wednesday - 9am-5.30pm

Thursday - 9am-7pm

Friday - 9am-5.30pm
