Staveley bridge project reaches key milestone

Construction work on a new bridge in Staveley reaches a key milestone today with the installation of concrete bridge beams on site.

Specialist heavy lifting plant and equipment is being employed to install the concrete beams, which will form the foundations of the new structure.

Installation of the concrete beams started today (Tuesday 28 March) and is scheduled to be completed tomorrow morning (Wednesday 29 March). Work will then start on the carriageway and bridge parapets. Construction work on the bridge is on schedule to be completed on 16 May 2017.

Cumbria County Council is investing approximately £500,000 in the Staveley bridge replacement project, which forms part of the county council’s overall £120m infrastructure recovery programme to repair damage caused during last winter’s floods. A total of £25 million is being invested in 2016/17 alone to repair over 350 roads and bridges, including Gowan Old Bridge in Staveley.

The bridge was severely damaged beyond repair during Storm Desmond and work on the replacement bridge in Staveley is progressing well. Piling works to support the new structure have been completed, with 57 piles already in place to a depth of 10 metres.

The replacement bridge will have a 17-metre span and will involve 50 cubic metres of concrete in the foundations to secure the resilience of the new structure.

Stephen Hall, Cumbria County Council Assistant Director, Highways, Transport and Fleet, said: “Today’s installation work marks a really important milestone in this key project to replace Gowan Old Bridge, which was badly damaged in last winter’s storms. The new structure is now taking shape and, once the concrete support beams are in place, we can start building the carriageway and bridge parapets. The loss of the bridge has had a significant impact on Staveley and we’d like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during this period.”
