Active 10 app helps adults get active this summer, starting with just 10 minutes of brisk walking

Summer is the perfect time of year to spend a little more time outside and to be more active, but the busy nature of modern life means that it is often difficult to fit physical activity into our days.

But the good news is, brisk walking counts as a form of intense physical activity and just 10 minutes a day can make a huge difference to your health, both in the short and long term. Over time, brisk walking can help to lower the risk of serious illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It’s for these reasons that health professionals are recommending brisk walking as a form of high intensity physical activity and in order to improve public health.

Colin Cox, Cumbria County Council's Director of Public Health, said:

“Whether you're walking to work or the shops, taking the dog for a walk or out exploring our beautiful county there are lots of ways you can fit 10 minutes of brisk walking into your day.

"Generally, adults in Cumbria are good at keeping physically active but for those that struggle, Active 10 is another way to do more, especially for those who are short on time.

"Taking a brisk 10 minute walk every day will get your heart pumping, improve your mood and lower the risk of some serious health issues."

The percentage of physically active adults in Cumbria overall is improving and is currently higher at 69.5% than the national average (66%) and the North West region average (65.1%).

Cumbria County Council is supporting Public Health England in encouraging adults to download the free ‘Active 10’ app, to help complete their 10 minutes of brisk walking daily and to gradually build this up to multiple ‘Active 10s’. The app is the first of its kind to show how much brisk walking a person is doing, showing walking intensity and time, rather than just distance or steps. Last year, over 3,000 of its users where based in Cumbria and collectively achieved 19,911 'Active 10s' between 20 August and 30 September 2017.
