Alston Front Street improvement works to commence from next week

Cumbria County Council will implement a temporary road closure to allow essential highway maintenance work on Front Street, Alston from Monday 8 October. This work is essential to ensure Front Street is safe and suitable for all road users ahead of the winter months.  This work is separate from the forthcoming plans regarding the redevelopment of Front Street.

The works will be carried out in two phases - the first phase, commencing Monday 8 October is from Market Cross to the junction with the A686, for five days. This section of road will be closed to traffic during this time.

The following week, commencing Monday 15 October, the second phase of resurfacing works will commence from the Potato Market to just south of the A689, for five days.  This section of road will be closed to traffic during this time.

Advanced signs have been placed on Front Street to inform drivers and the local community of the forthcoming closure, and a signed diversion will be in place with access for local residents, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists maintained at all times throughout the closure.

Commenting on the forthcoming works, Cllr Claire Driver, local member for Alston, said:

“I am pleased that these improvement works are scheduled to take place and will be completed before the colder weather starts to arrive, and well ahead of Christmas.  The works will significantly improve the surface of Front Street.  To be clear, these works are separate from the redevelopment plans and are intended to enhance road safety ahead of the winter months.

“I am very excited about the forthcoming redevelopment of Front Street and wish to thank the local community again for their time and input to the discussions and plans, which are currently being developed. I am very proud to represent this community and determined to deliver an improved Front Street we can all enjoy together for many years to come.”

Proposals on the redevelopment of Front Street have been discussed at a number of public drop-in sessions during the summer and further updates regarding the proposed design and layout of the scheme will be confirmed in due course.
