Cockermouth’s Market Place is back to its best

Cockermouth’s Market Place is back to its best following completion of resurfacing work on Tuesday 26 June.

The works have involved reconstructing the carriageway, putting down a new asphalt surface, replacing ironworks such as manhole covers and grills, and installing stone setts at three pedestrian crossing points.

Cumbria County Council has worked with Allerdale Borough Council on the project and both local authorities are pleased with the results.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “Market Place is now looking better than it’s done for many years thanks to the joint efforts of Cumbria County Council, Allerdale Borough Council and our contractor Thomas Armstrong. I’m aware these works have caused some disruption in the town and I’d like to thank local people for their patience and understanding. I know from feedback we’ve had that they appreciate all the work that’s been done.”

Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Councillor and ward councillor for Cockermouth All Saints, said: “It’s great to see Market Place open again to traffic and I’d like to thank the contractors and colleagues at Cumbria County Council for doing such a good job. It was also great to see them going the extra mile and open up the street for the town’s carnival. There has obviously been some upheaval to local businesses, but the work was necessary given the state of the road and I hope the free parking we provided helped. Cockermouth has had its fair share of roadworks in recent years, so hopefully that will be it for some time to come.”
