Resurfacing and footway construction works to commence at Friargate Car Park, Penrith

Following consultation with the local community, Cumbria County Council’s Highways department will be carrying out resurfacing and footway construction works on Friargate Car Park in Penrith from Monday 13 May. The works are expected to take up to 5 days to complete and are dependent on dry weather conditions.

The council will also make some changes to the layout of the car park, moving the disabled bay closer to the pavement and creating another disabled bay; creating footpaths and footway markings for safer pedestrian routes, and implementing a one-way system to increase safety for road users.

Local residents and businesses have been contacted to advise them of the works and that the team will maintain access where possible for all affected properties and business premises throughout the works. There may be short windows of time where we cannot guarantee access due to surface dressing being laid immediately outside their property and the need for this material to cool down before driving on it.

If anyone has any problems regarding access, please liaise with the site manager and they will advise when individual properties will be affected so that people can plan their access arrangements.

Advance works to prepare the site may commence before Monday 13 May, however this will only affect a limited number of parking spaces.

The council recognises the frustration that resurfacing works can cause, particularly when taking place close to both residential and business premises. The resurfacing works are essential to prolong the life of the car park, which is popular with the local community and visitors to the town. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption and we’d urge anyone with any concerns or issues during these works to speak to the site manager or telephone the Highways Hotline on 0300 303 2992.
