Search starts for new on-call firefighters in Barrow

Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is launching a recruitment drive to find new On-Call Firefighters to serve their community in Barrow.

On-call Firefighters are needed for a newly-created crew which will be based at Barrow Fire Station from later this year.

The On-call crew will provide support to the existing full-time fire crew in Barrow and the Walney On-call crew, as part of the CFRS Integrated Risk Management Plan - Year 3 Action Plan 2018/19.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service are looking for men and women from all walks of life and all ages. Qualifications aren’t necessary as full training will be provided to carry out the role of a firefighter. Applicants must be physically fit, aged at least 18 and live or work within close proximity of Barrow fire station.

On-call firefighters are ‘on call’ to respond to a range of emergencies. They can still have another job until the call comes and then they become a professional firefighter. They receive a retainer fee of approximately £2,200 a year, plus additional payments for each incident they attend and for attendance at training courses.

Anyone interested can apply now and applications will close on Monday 10th September. For more information, visit www.cumbria.gov.uk/oncallfirefighters

Barrow fire station is hosting a series of events to provide an opportunity to find out more about the role and have a go at some of the physical fitness tests:

  • Wednesday 18th July, from 6pm-7.30pm and 7.30pm-9pm - Taster and engagement sessions
  • Thursday 19th July, 6pm-9pm - Fitness tests
  • Wednesday 1st August, 6pm-7.30pm and 7.30pm-9pm - Taster and engagement sessions
  • Thursday 2nd August, 6pm-9pm - Fitness tests
  • Thursday 23rd August, 6pm-9pm - Positive Engagement session

Cllr Janet Willis, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Fire and Rescue, said: “A new On-call fire appliance in Barrow is being introduced as one of the changes in Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service’s Integrated Risk Management Plan. We are now actively recruiting On-call firefighters who will be available to support the full-time crew in Barrow and the On-call crew on Walney. Being an On-call firefighter is an incredibly rewarding role and is a great opportunity for people to serve their local community, learn new skills and earn some additional income.

“All our On-call staff are trained to carry out the duties of a professional firefighter and they attend the full range of incidents including fires, floods, road traffic collisions, chemical spills and more. We have approximately 390 On-call Firefighters at fire stations throughout Cumbria. Many have full or part-time jobs, are self-employed or stay at home parents. But when the call comes they stop what they are doing and become part of a team of professional firefighters.”
