Fostering in Cumbria

Become part of Cumbria's biggest family

Children of all ages (0-18 years of age) and from various cultural and social backgrounds are placed in foster care for many different reasons.

Last year (2012/13) in Cumbria the fostering team made a total of 350 placements. About 20% of children placed were under 1 year old, almost 50% were 5 years or younger. Around 16% were aged between 14 and 15 years.

This included children with special needs such as those with a physical or learning disability and those with mental health and behavioural problems. Some have suffered abuse and neglect. Some have brothers and sisters. Others have committed criminal offences. Neglect is the most common reason for children coming into care in Cumbria.

Some children will have experienced upset and trauma as a result of their circumstances and this may be displayed in difficult behaviour. For some, the separation from their birth family will cause them distress whatever their experience in the family.

They will each have a variety of unique needs and as a carer, you will be required to provide a safe, healthy and nurturing environment in order to meet these needs and give these children the opportunity to live their life to the full.

Helping to make even a small difference to a childs life is hugely satisfying.
