Walkmill Woods officially transferred to local parish council

Cumbria County Council is pleased to confirm the transfer of Walkmill Community Woodland, a popular recreation area near Moresby, to Moresby Parish Council.

Moresby Parish Council, alongside partners Walkmill Community Woodland Activity Group and the West Cumbria Rivers Trust, made an application to the county council for a Community Asset Transfer (CAT) to take on responsibility for managing and developing the site, under a 99-year lease.

The application was approved today (Thursday 17 December) at a meeting of the county council’s Cabinet.

A CAT means that a building or land is transferred from public ownership to a community, voluntary or social enterprise group.

The Walkmill Community Woodland area is former mine site close to Moresby Parks and is a popular recreational area for the local community.

The CAT will enable the parish council, alongside their partners, to combine their skills, knowledge, experience and resources to manage and build on the success of the site.

Prior to the approval of the application, the county council’s Rights of Way team made a number of improvements to the path network in the woods, with further works planned as Coronavirus restrictions ease.  The whole site can be accessed by the public and all of the footpaths are protected for use by the public.

Cllr David Southward, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said:

“I am delighted to confirm the transfer of this well-known and much-loved area of woodland to the local parish council and their partners.

“Their combined experience and knowledge will help further improve and develop the area, and guarantees the future of the woods for the local community to enjoy.

“This is excellent news for local residents, and I’d like to thank all involved behind the scenes that have secured the future of this excellent local site.”

Nick Troughton, Chairman of Moresby Parish Council, said:

"This is exciting news for the residents of Moresby and others from further afield who enjoy access to the woods.  The area is cherished by the whole community as a free-to-access area and we intend to maintain this with our partners, the Walkmill Community Woodland Activity Group and the West Cumbria Rivers Trust.

"We intend to run a variety of outdoor activities and conservation projects starting with a ‘Green Gym’ in February and March. If anybody is interested in volunteering, please get in touch."
