Cumbria Libraries will be encouraging children to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge again this year and the theme is Wild World Heroes celebrating reading, nature and action for the environment.
This annual national event, which this year begins on 10 July, encourages children aged 4 to 11 to set themselves a reading challenge to help prevent the summer reading “dip”.
Cumbria Libraries will support and motivate thousands of children to keep reading to build their skills and confidence. Signing up is free, you just need to be a library member, which is also free! You can sign up by visiting the Cumbria Libraries website or your local library.
The Challenge is simple; children read whatever they like in their chosen format over the summer holidays to receive incentives and a certificate once they’ve completed it. They can read fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books or graphic novels. Audiobooks and eBooks can all be used to complete the Challenge and Cumbria LibrariesBorrowbox service is a great way to get free access to eBooks and eAudiobooks for the Summer Reading Challenge. We’ll have a specially selected collection of books just right for Wild World Heroes!

The Summer Reading Challenge begins on 10 July and ends mid-September, giving children plenty of time over the summer to borrow and read their 6 books and come into the library to tell us what they’ve read.
Cllr Deborah Earl, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Local Communities, said:
‘’It’s great to see our library service continues to encourage the younger generation to pick up a book and enhance their skills, knowledge and confidence in reading, especially over the summer holiday period.
“It’s always good to set ourselves challenges and feel a sense of achievement so it’s fantastic we can involve children in an event like this.
“The library staff and families continue to work extremely hard to ensure the Summer Reading Challenge is a success every year and given the difficulties young people have faced this past year, this is a great opportunity for them to thrive!
“Thank you to everyone involved and good luck to all of those who will be taking part - I can’t wait to hear all about it!’’
