Cumbria County Council reminds visitors and locals that the consultation to improve the cycling and walking offer along key corridors in Cumbria, remains open until Friday 22 April.
As part of the proposals for the Hadrian's Wall and West Coast corridor, the Hadrian's Wall Cycling and Walking Corridor project aims to connect local communities and tourist attractions by providing a multi-user route. By enabling green and active travel choices, both residents and visitors will benefit. The route, which will be off-road (where possible), would run from Gilsland, east of Carlisle, to Ravenglass, and then on to Millom, in the south of the county.
As part of the Heart of the Lakes corridor proposals, the See More Lake District Cycling project will provide better cycling facilities, attract more participants, and disperse visitors away from traditional spots, helping to diversify the local economy. Additionally, the project benefits residents seeking active travel and leisure opportunities in Cumbria.
Both projects are part of the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, which could potentially result in significant funding from the UK Government, pending approval of the business cases.
The Borderlands funding will not be able to deliver all the proposals identified in the consultation. Therefore, feedback to help prioritise the routes is greatly appreciated. As a result of the Borderlands Investment, the county council will be able to begin implementing the active travel strategies for each of the corridors.
As part of the planning process, the county council has asked for feedback from a variety of groups, including equestrians, cyclists, walkers, people with pushchairs, people with wheelchairs, and people with disabilities.
The consultation will remain open until Friday 22 April. For more information and to complete the online questionnaire, please visit www.cumbria.gov.uk/cyclingandwalking
