Cumbria Libraries host free special events and competitions for children for World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day today, Thursday 3 March 2022, Cumbria Libraries are hosting a series of special events and competitions throughout the month.

These events are a fantastic opportunity to showcase everything Cumbria Libraries have to offer and to highlight the joys of reading to local children across the county. All libraries are also giving away £1 worth of book vouchers to all children taking park in the events.

This Thursday (3 March) Workington Library are hosting two special World Book Day themed events including ‘Stories and Rhymes for babies and toddlers’ at 2pm and a special celebration at 3.30pm.

Carlisle Library are planning school visits with a different class visiting the library each day for the first two weeks of March. The Cumbria Libraries Outreach Team are also visiting local schools to talk about what the library has to offer.

Penrith Library are planning a special costumed double helping of Baby Bounce and Rhyme on Thursday 3 March, 10.30 - 11.30 as well as class visits from local schools.

This is just a snapshot of some of the brilliant activities taking place. To discover what’s on in your local library visit the Cumbria Libraries website, follow Cumbria Libraries on Facebook, or get in touch.

In February, on the lead up to World Book Day, libraries across Cumbria hosted their first costume swap where the service asked for children’s costume donations. Cumbrian families were incredibly generous and over 150 costumes were donated and given out.

Popular costumes included Harry Potter, Willy Wonker, lions, pirates and princesses, as well as fabulous hats, wigs and wands. The costume swaps have helped to promote recycling, ease the burden on parent’s pockets and celebrate the magical world of reading.

Cllr Deborah Earl, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Local Communities, said:

“These events are a wonderful way to get local children’s imaginations running and explore the pleasure of books and reading.

“It’s great that Cumbria Libraries continue to host events like these and mark special occasions like World Book Day. It’s not only fun for our children, but also valuable in educating and developing language skills and advance reading levels. Check out what your library is doing to celebrate World Book Day and join in the fun!”
