Trees planted in Penrith as part of National Tree Week

Yesterday (27 November), 28 trees were planted at a park in Carleton, Penrith as part of National Tree Week which runs until Sunday 4 December.

Funded by Cumbria County Council’s Environment Fund, trees including species of elder, silver birch and rowan, were planted by a local contractor alongside volunteers from Penrith Action for Community Transition (PACT), the Carleton Park Community Group, local County Councillor Patricia Bell, and Penrith Town Councillors Deb Holden and Ron Kenyon.

A short section of hedgerow was also planted using a mix of native species for variety and to encourage wildlife, including hawthorn, blackthorn and hazel.

The planting contributes to the longer-term vision of Carleton Park Community Group to create greener and more accessible spaces for the local community to enjoy nature.

Over the last year, thanks to £1.2m of funding from the County Council’s Environment Fund, each of the council’s six local committees has been working with district, town and parish councils to deliver vital environmental improvements to its communities. Works undertaken as part of the Environment Fund include verge maintenance and biodiversity improvements, tree maintenance and replacement, and footpath improvements.

Councillor Patricia Bell, Member of Eden Local Committee and local councillor for Penrith East, said:

“I am delighted that we, as a local committee, have been able to support these vital environmental improvements in our communities. It was great to be involved alongside the local community yesterday to help plant these trees.

“Thank you to all of those who joined us and got involved, and thank you to local contractor, Mark Lloyd, who helped facilitate this event.”

Councillor Celia Tibble, Cabinet Member for the Environment, added:

“It is fantastic to see what a difference the Environment Fund is having in each of our six districts. Trees are not only vital in our fight against climate change but will provide far reaching physical and mental health benefits for people living within this community.”
